A New Makeup Routine for Fall with Target Style.

With a change in seasons often comes the urge to mix things up and break up the routine. For me, this change is usually reflected in my wardrobe, but this fall I wanted to extend it to my beauty routine and test out a new look and introduce new products into my everyday look. Instead of going into it blind and just grabbing a bunch of products all at once (aka a recipe for disaster!), I called in the experts and turned to Target’s Beauty Concierge. They gave me some recommendations for some of the best of the best from their huge selection of products based on my skin tone and personal preferences within my beauty routine. A look at how I’m shaking things up with my beauty products this fall:

The step where I was most anxious about introducing a new product was my foundation. My skin isn’t perfect and I also struggle with redness, yet I hate the feel of a full coverage, full face of makeup. My skin tone can also be a tricky one to match; I’m very fair but with pink undertones, so it can be really hard to find shades that aren’t too yellow or too dark. I explained this all upfront to Monica, the Target Beauty Concierge in the Target store near my apartment, and luckily she was ready for the challenge. She instantly recommended one of the premier products Target carries, Laneige’s Cushion BB Cream. It’s a Korean cult favorite that recently came to the U.S. (and to Target—score!) that’s not quite a liquid and not quite a powder and offers really natural, light coverage that’s buildable and leaves skin with that flawless, airbrushed look. For touchups throughout the day, we grabbed Neutrogena’s Shine Control Powder in Invisible to fight shine without adding heavy powder or additional coverage.

Now that we had the base figured out, it was time to layer in a few secret weapons to create the dewy, no-makeup makeup look I like. Monica recommended a dash of concealer for any blemishes and my under-eye area, and touch of highlighter to create that pretty, soft, luminous look. We grabbed Maybelline’s FIT concealer, which I was initially skeptical about because I don’t typically use liquid concealers. But I became a believer after trying her instructions out at home and using three small dabs under my eye and blending it in using my fingers. I love how light and creamy it is, which makes blending really easy and looks very natural (anyone else cringe whenever they see someone with a noticeably lighter shade under their eyes?) The product is also a multi-tasker and works really well on any red spots or blemishes, and the shade is a great match with not only my skin tone but also the Laneige Cushion BB Cream. Next up? A little bit of highlighting. Monica recommended applying the L’Oreal True Match Lumi Highlighter in Ice with my fingertips down the bridge of my nose, on the apples of my cheeks, and a bit on my chin and forehead. The slightly pink tone of the highlighter works really well with my skin and I love how light it feels and how well it blends in. A little bit goes a long way and looks very natural without any obnoxious sparkle.

To finish things up, I wanted to stray a bit from my typical classic red lipstick look and try a new shade for fall, so we grabbed Pixi’s Mattelustre Lipstick in Plum Berry. It’s a really pretty plum shade that would look amazing on anyone and manages to be both matte and creamy at the same time. I can be really picky about lipsticks because I hate dealing with nonstop touch-ups or dried-out lips throughout the day. I’ve been really impressed with Pixi and already can’t wait to grab a few more shades to test out. Last but not least, I turned to Monica to solve one of my biggest beauty woes: eyeliner that smudges or transfers to the top of my eyelid. I’ve always loved the look of a classic winged eyeliner but haven’t been able to pull it off. But after noticing Monica’s amazing eye makeup, I knew I was in good hands. We grabbed Pixi’s Lash Line Ink felt eyeliner and, with a few tips on the winged look, my problems have been solved. The felt tip of the liner makes it super simple (even without the most steady hands!) and this is the one product I’ve ever tried that hasn’t smudged or transferred on me throughout the day.
