the perks of being a wallflower.

Some books really just have a lasting impression on you… The Perks of Being a Wallflower was one of those for me. I remember reading it for the first time as a teenager – staying up all night being unable to tear myself away, learning from Charlie’s story as I underlined and highlighted my favorite moments and quotes (rare for me, I am a stickler about not writing in books). Since that first time I have reread Perks countless times and passed my worn copy along from friend to friend, eager to share the story of life as an observer. I had my favorite quote engraved on the back of my very first iPod and remember dreaming of turning eighteen so I could get that same quote tattooed on me – we accept the love we think we deserve (still one of my all time favorite mantras).
As I sat in the movie theater alone on Monday waiting for the movie to begin I was felt equally excited and terrified. Could they do this book justice? Would it still have the same impact? It truly was everything I hoped it would be and more – there were moments where I found myself with a genuine smile on my face and others where the tears were flowing. Those moments of feeling infinite were so easy to connect with and I don’t know if I’ve ever loved the book more.
For those of you who have not read The Perks of Being a Wallflower yet, please do. It’s a quick read and I promise you that you will gain something from it. And for those of you who already loved the book, don’t be afraid to go see the movie, preferably alone – give yourself time to enjoy it and fully absorb it without the distraction of anyone else.
Do I have any other Perks fans here? Did you love the movie too?
