Growing up on the east coast, summer meant spending as much time outside as possible. From backyard BBQs to days at the lake, it was three solid months of outdoor time. This has been something I’ve missed since swapping the small town I grew up in for big cities so I was thrilled when I discovered a communal backyard space during a tour of my new apartment and have been dreaming of getting together with friends al fresco since moving in.

I finally made that happen and kicked off summer with my first little outdoor get together thanks to a little help from Pier 1. Their summer collection is full of bright and colorful pieces that are not only stylish, but also ultra functional for outdoor entertaining (think shatter-proof, dishwasher safe and lightweight). Summers in San Francisco are notorious for being grey and gloomy so I put a fun spin on the summertime blues that can kick in when you’re facing yet another foggy day, grabbing a variety of blue hued Pier 1 pieces to set the scene. From outdoor pillows to serving pieces and drinkware, the blue details created a really cohesive feel and was a super simple way to elevate the evening and let’s be real… create an Instagram-worthy tablescape!

I always tend to psych myself out about entertaining and get overwhelmed by how much work I think needs to go into it. Instead of stressing out, I kept things super simple with snacks and small bites grabbed at the grocery store (no prep required!). I’m far from a Martha Stewart, but cute serving pieces and drinkware can elevate even the simplest spread and luckily Pier 1 had my back to easily pull everything together for a mid-week get together.

Although I’ve only been in San Francisco for just over two years, the friends I’ve made in my new city have been incredible so I love any excuse for us to get together, especially when it involves connecting new people. Entertaining is one of the best ways to bring people together (especially when a cheese plate is involved) and having everyone over for a little backyard hangout created the perfect atmosphere to catch up and have a little escape from the day-to-day hustle of city life. Now that I’m stocked with outdoor entertaining supplies from Pier 1, I’m already planning my next backyard girls night and can’t wait to make the most of the outdoor space all season long.

What are some of your secrets for outdoor entertaining?
