A New Year.
My New Year’s celebrations this year were rather different than in years past. Instead of ringing in the new year with friends, I found myself alone in Copenhagen – and feeling a bit down to be honest. It was the loneliness that comes with traveling by yourself paired with feeling out of place in a city I didn’t know much about. After foiled dinner plans from Google Maps leading me to closed restaurants (lesson learned: always make reservations!), I ended up back at my hotel with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and a tallboy of some random beer I found at 7-Eleven. I was about ready to call it a night and succumb to the disappointment of a New Year’s Eve alone when I had a sudden change of heart, and headed out in search of Copenhagen’s liveliest spot: City Hall Square.
And so I wandered toward the loud blasts of fireworks and flashes in the sky until I found myself within the crowds, surrounded by strangers but happy. Happy to be starting the New Year in a new city. Happy to have finally taken the leap and experienced travel on my own. Happy to have the fresh start of a new year ahead.
The countdown may have been in a language I didn’t understand but the energy was electric. From the non-stop bursts of fireworks to the cheers throughout the crowds, 2017 started off on a high note and the perfect ending to my little European adventure.
Cheers to a new year. May this be our best yet!
