morning grind.
I never really thought I’d say this, but I’ve become obsessed with my morning workouts. Maybe it’s the rush that comes with knowing you’ve crushing it while most other people are still in bed. Or maybe it’s having your morning coffee and breakfast waiting for you afterward as motivation. Or it could be that I just like getting it done and out of the way early so that I have more time later in the day to tackle my to do list. Regardless of the reasons, morning workouts rule.

Although I’ve always been a morning person, until recently I’ve preferred after-dark workouts. During my training cycles for the Chicago Marathon, I’d log my miles after the sun had set and soak up the city’s skyline views (um, looking back this may have not been the best idea considering I ran alone and with headphones in but luckily I survived). Many failed attempts at setting an early alarm to get a run in have resulted in me snoozing instead of heading out for a run but I finally figured out the secret: group fitness classes. More specifically, group fitness classes that charge you for last minute cancellations. Because an extra hour of sleep probably isn’t worth $10-$30, right? It’s just enough of a motivator to get your butt out of bed and get your morning workout in.
My favorite morning grind lately has been Soulcycle – the good vibes of class and the upbeat music start my day off on a positive note and give me a solid burst of energy, even before I have my first cup of coffee. I’ve even been taking 6 AM classes twice a week which mean I’m waking up at 6 AM and heading into class before the sun even rises; something I never thought would happen. To make the morning grind easier I plan ahead and pack my gym bag + lay out my outfit the morning before so I don’t have to shuffle around in the dark too much while B and Callie are still asleep.
As the temperatures begin to dip a bit, I’ve switched from cropped legging to full-length and need to layer on a few extra pieces for the chilly dark walk to the studio. I’m obsessed with these printed CALIA leggings because they are oh so pretty but also are amazing quality – they have just the right amount of compression and the high-waist keeps everything tucked in nicely (and I don’t have to worry about my butt hanging out while I tap it back!). To keep me nice and cozy on my walk to the studio I layer a long-sleeved shirt over my sports bra and finish with a vest which works perfectly with SF’s temperamental weather.
Are you a fan of morning workouts? What are some of your favorite ways to get sweaty in the morning?
