Decking the Halls with eBay.

The holiday season always brings back fond memories from my childhood – decorating the Christmas tree always brings me right back to decorating the tree as a kid with my family. We had a longstanding tradition of receiving one ornament each on Christmas morning so decorating was always full of “remember this one?!” as we took each ornament out of the box and hung them on the tree. I can also distinctly remember the ornaments that we could not touch – my mom’s vintage ornaments from her own tree growing up. They were gorgeous jewel-toned mercury glass balls – some striped, some with glitter -and they were very seriously on the “look but don’t touch” list for my sister and me.
During my last few years of college, I began fantasizing about having a Christmas tree of my own and decided that I wanted a tree entirely full of vintage ornaments, just like my mom’s. For years I’d scour eBay during the summer months, building my very own collection one auction at a time and carefully tucking them away until I had my own first apartment.
Christmas has always been my very favorite time of year and getting my Christmas tree is always a highlight. From scouring the tree lot for the perfect one, to naming my tree (yes, it happens. I’m nuts), to carefully positioning it in the stand to ensure it’s set up straight – I love every moment. But there’s really nothing better than opening up my box of treasured ornaments and placing each on the tree.
My vintage mercury glass ornament collection has been several years in the making but definitely is one of my most prized possessions. The variety in shapes, colors and sizes always makes my Christmas tree look amazing in a really simple, classic way. No elaborate themes or decorations here! Everyone has their “thing” and my vintage ornament collection is definitely mine – and eBay has been the ultimate place to shop for them over the years.
